Friends,

 

As you are aware, on Sunday, Jan. 17 President Veazey presented Counsel to
the Church by way of a web cast from the Temple Sanctuary in Independence.
He also presented a letter concerning changes in the Council of Twelve
Apostles.  Both of these will be considered by the World Conference. I hope
that you were able to view the web cast. Persons who did not see the
presentation, or wish to review it, can find it on the World Church web
site, along with the documents that were presented by President Veazey.

 

The decision of President Veazey to bring the Counsel to the Church at this
is time is an historic development in the life of the church. It was
presented now to allow the members and friends of the church to have time
for prayerful and careful consideration before the Conference. 

 

I have attached those two documents, as well as a draft of the schedule of
the World Conference, and the spiritual formation resource entitled
"Yearning for God".  I have also included a Question and Answer document
that deals with the Counsel to the Church, that has been provided by the
First Presidency. The plan is that additional Question and Answer documents
will be forthcoming to further explore the Counsel to the Church. 

 

These four documents are being provided to delegates and alternates for
their use in preparing for the World Conference.  I will also have them sent
to pastors and congregations for broad distribution, so that those who will
not be attending the Conference can also be informed, and prayerfully
support the World Conference.

 

You will notice that the schedule for the World Conference provides sessions
early in the week in which the delegates will participate in both Spiritual
Formation and Non-Legislative Discussion together. The intention is that the
delegates make spiritual preparation together, and that we share in
discussion of issues before the conference without the restrictions of
Parliamentary Procedure, prior to considering the Counsel and resolutions as
a legislative body. The information being sent today is provided to enable
delegates and alternates to make personal preparation before we arrive for
the Conference.

 

The Coastal Bend Mission Center is also planning to hold two meetings of
delegates and alternates, for the purpose of familiarizing ourselves with
the Conference procedures, legislative items, delegate preparation for and
responsibility during the conference. We will not debate issues, but rather
ascertain that we are current on the matters that come before the
Conference, and our participation as part of the Conference body.
Interested persons who are not delegates and alternates will be welcome to
attend one of the meetings as well.  The meetings will be  March 21 from
2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Centro de Houston and Austin Congregations.
